DeKalb Community Unit School District 428 Calendar 2026-2027

DeKalb Community Unit School District 428 revised its elementary map for the 2025–26 opening of Dr. Leroy A. Mitchell Elementary School. The approved attendance areas now distribute K–5 students among Mitchell and the district’s other elementary schools, with current residency documentation required for placement. Older maps predate both the new building and the accompanying redistribution, so they no longer provide a reliable starting point for registration.

After fifth grade, students move into Clinton Rosette or Huntley Middle School under a separate middle-school boundary and then come together at DeKalb High School. The district also serves Malta and Cortland, and the community name in a mailing address does not replace the official attendance maps. A student’s elementary assignment and middle-school assignment must be checked as linked but distinct parts of the route.

Two-way dual language adds a newer pathway. The district launched kindergarten cohorts in August 2025 at Cortland, Founders, and Littlejohn. Seats are offered first to students living within each host school’s boundary, followed by eligible students from elsewhere in District 428 when capacity remains; applicants follow the program’s information and lottery procedures. Dual-language placement can change the elementary site without changing district residency or the eventual one-high-school destination. Any account predating Mitchell or the 2025 language-program launch is incomplete; the current elementary map, middle-school boundary, and program rules must be read together.
